What does the greenway access approval process look like?
- Collect petition signatures from neighbors and present the petition and the collection of signatures to the Matthew town board.
- Matthews town board to research and collect construction costs.
- Matthews town board to vote on approval of the greenway access pending construction costs.
Will the proposed greenway access result in an increase in crime?
From the Matthews Police Department: “According to the most recent data from the Matthews Police Department and community crime mapping resources, there have been no reported crime incidents directly on the Four Mile Creek Greenway itself over the past year (2024). The greenway covers a broad area with multiple access points, such as Squirrel Lake Park (1631 Pleasant Plains Rd) and Matthews Elementary (200 W McDowell St), and no specific crime reports are tied to the greenway’s trail itself. While there have been some incidents in the immediate vicinity, such as larceny from auto, there is no evidence to suggest these are directly linked to greenway access. Determining a direct correlation between greenway connections and nearby crimes is challenging without further analysis.”
What can I do to help?
The initial step is to demonstrate that the trail access is an unmet need in the area. Some ways to do that:
- Sign the petition and urge your neighbors to do so as well.
- Email the Matthews town board elected officials letting them know how adding this trail access point would affect you. Generating enough noise will help this move into a project for approval.
- Please right-click and copy the email address to use your preferred email program
- Contact the Board (emails all individuals below)
